Detailed Chemical Abundances of Extragalactic Globular Clusters
نویسنده
چکیده
We outline a method to measure the detailed chemical composition of ex-tragalactic (unresolved) globular clusters (GCs) from echelle spectra of their integrated light. Our goal is to use this method to measure abundance patterns of GCs in distant spiral and elliptical galaxies to constrain their formation histories. To develop this technique we have obtained a " training set " of integrated– light spectra of resolved GCs in the Milky Way and LMC by scanning across the clusters during exposures. Our training set also include spectra of individual stars in those GCs from which abundances can be obtained in the normal way to provide a check on our integrated–light results. We present here the preliminary integrated—light analysis of one GC in our training set, NGC 104 (47 Tuc), and outline some of the techniques utilized and problems encountered in that analysis.

Chemical Abundances and Kinematics in Globular Clusters and Local Group Dwarf Galaxies and Their Implications for Formation Theories of the Galactic Halo
We review Galactic halo formation theories and supporting evidence, in particular kinematics and detailed chemical abundances of stars in some relevant globular clusters as well as Local Group dwarf galaxies. Outer halo red HB clusters tend to have large eccentricities and inhabit the area of the Lee diagram populated by dwarf spheroidal stars, favoring an extraGalactic origin. Old globulars sh...
متن کاملChemical Abundance Study of One Red Giant Star in Ngc 5694 : a Globular Cluster with Dwarf Spheroidals’ Chemical Signature?
We report the abundance analysis of one red giant branch star in the metalpoor outer halo globular cluster NGC 5694. We obtain [Fe/H] = −1.93, based on the ionized lines, and our metallicity measurement is in good agreement with previous estimates. We find that [Ca+Ti/2Fe] and [Cu/Fe] of NGC 5694 are about 0.3 – 0.4 dex lower than other globular clusters with similar metallicities, but similar ...
متن کاملThe Detailed Chemical Properties of M31 Star Clusters I. Fe, Alpha and Light Elements
We present ages, [Fe/H] and abundances of the alpha elements Ca I, Si I, Ti I, Ti II, and light elements Mg I, Na I, and Al I for 31 globular clusters in M31, which were obtained from high resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR> 60) echelle spectra of their integrated light. All abundances and ages are obtained using our original technique for high resolution integrated light abundance ana...
متن کاملGlobular Cluster Abundances from High - Resolution Integrated Light Spectra , I : 47 Tuc
We describe the detailed chemical abundance analysis of a high-resolution (R∼30,000), integrated-light (IL), spectrum of the core of the Galactic globular cluster (GC) 47 Tuc. This is the first paper in a series in which we develop and demonstrate a method for measuring detailed abundances in spatial unresolved extragalactic GCs. The echelle spectra were taken with the du Pont telescope at Las ...
متن کاملDetailed abundances from integrated-light spectroscopy: Milky Way globular clusters
Context. Integrated-light spectroscopy at high spectral resolution is rapidly maturing as a powerful way to measure detailed chemical abundances for extragalactic globular clusters (GCs). Aims. We test the performance of our analysis technique for integrated-light spectra by applying it to seven well-studied Galactic GCs that span a wide range of metallicities. Methods. Integrated-light spectra...
